That's as may be, but 'voter apathy' is spoken of by politicians as though it were force of nature rather than an effect of the way politics is conducted. Not enough praise is given to the Government when it gets things right. The distrust of politicians is the fault of the media, we are told. The low turnout at the last Election was partly to do with the lack of enthusiasm for voting among first-time voters. Yet where are they to go with their anger? Indeed, anger not apathy is the right word to describe their disillusionment.Īs many people have said, the political class is now completely out of kilter with the mood of this country. They simply cannot understand that though we are told that there is not enough money for tertiary education, or even for school books, that there is enough for war. This is why I am fairly optimistic about this generation, who I see becoming more and more politicised.įor many, the anti- war protests have proved an uplifting experience. They are not terrified by Islam, though many are turned off by the idea of any religion at all. THEY have been the beneficiaries of cheaper travel are not scared by Europe, the euro or foreigners. Many of them are passionately antiracist and fully accepting of cultural differences.
They know Government policy on drugs is a joke, that drugs are cheap, easily available and that most of them don't kill you. They know about crime because, particularly if they are young men, it has happened to them. They know public transport is a mess because, too old to be chauffered by parents and too young to afford a car, they can't avoid using it. The young don't have to rely on anecdotal evidence about key issues such as crime and transport.
In the words of one young person I know, you feel 'worse than a guinea pig'. You know a university education may mean incurring huge debts. Young people, we are told, are selfish, apathetic, barely literate and mistrustful. And so do many of the people the exercise was aimed at. As it is, I find the spectacle horrifying. If so much wasn't at stake, this would be simply sad. What a peculiar fantasy for a middle-aged man to have, but Blair's midlife crisis knows no bounds.
